A contract valued $17.3 million has been awarded to Colin Talbert Contracting Services to build a new access bridge for Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release engineer Shameer Samaad said a bypass bridge was built and the existing bridge was dismantled on Tuesday. Coffer dams are currently being built to lay the foundation for the bridge. The project is expected to last six months and will be built to a dimension of 54 feet by 17 feet, with a 14-feet carriage way and a three-feet walkway.
GINA said residents are grateful that a new bridge is being built as the previous one was erected at a low level and proved problematic during the rainy season. It was also unable to accommodate heavy-duty vehicles.
