I have a weekly TV call- in community programme called the ‘Peoples’ Voice’ every Sunday at 5.06 pm where citizens air their views on Ch 5 Bartica on matters concerning Bartica and its environs. No politics are allowed for discussion. The most calls I received this month related to the following:
At the new 3 Miles School cars and minibuses speed and use the road recklessly. The Bartica police need more traffic ranks to curb these reckless drivers.
The Bartica Secondary School is short of teachers the children have nothing to do all day. Parents are very much concerned.
First Avenue needs to become a one way; it’s too narrow for two-way traffic. Bartica has lots of cars, buses, canters, trucks, 4 wheel bikes and wayward pedestrians. Not forgetting cows, horses and donkeys roaming the streets.
Bartica also needs another steamer day. On Tuesdays, we have lots of traffic in and out of the town. The road from Bartica to Linden is bad and is not safe for business people.
Security police at checkpoints in the interior harass miners and sometimes take away their gold.
When will the new fire station open?
Will Doctor Sagala be reinstated, at Bartica Hospital? The community would be happy to have him back. When will surgery be done at our new hospital?
The community welcomes the new shed boats and double engines, but there is need to get rid of some bad elements working these boats.
The Bartica ‘Arcade’ residents are complaining every week of undesirables at the front of the arcade who usually interfere with young women passing.
Guyana Water Inc has spent millions for us to get potable water regularly, but our service is irregular.
Bartica is a paradise compared to other communities; most of us do not know what we have. It is a place that can be transformed to a real paradise, but the authorities here are playing dice with us.
Our river bed is filling up with sand and garbage.
The climate is changing and the rivers need dredging.
