Striking a pose: Dancers from Katiwau (Sand Creek) Culture Dance Troupe in Region Nine strike a pose at the Amerindian Heritage Celebrations in Lethem over the weekend. Founded by Dorothy Faria this group was described as “a spectacle of beauty and discipline. They were well rehearsed, their costumes were beautiful and they were obviously proud and happy to be there performing; the audience appreciated them.” Faria, according to a resident, involves the whole of Sand Creek Village in her preparations. The woman shares traditional songs through the agency of the youths and it was noted that all the women who sang the old songs are deceased with the exception of two, one of whom has moved to Brazil, while the other, Mary Marco, is now 105 years old.
