A Kuru Kuru man who allegedly pretended to be the owner of a Georgetown property and attempted to sell it to another for $6M was placed on $1M bail yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Ray Faria, 51, of Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke pleaded not guilty to the charge of fraud when it was read to him by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that on September 11 in Georgetown Faria, a father of three, obtained $6M from the virtual complainant (VC), Francesso Enacio Da Silva, by falsely pretending to be Raymond Hutfield Barrington owner of a property in Kitty, Georgetown. The accused allegedly sold the property to the VC for the said amount of money.
The VC told the court that on the day in question he met Faria in the office of an attorney where he provided a passport in the name of Raymond Hutfield Barrington as identification and the transport for the Kitty property. Da Silva said he paid the accused cash in the presence of the attorney and there are documents to prove that the transaction occurred.
However, attorney-at-law Vic Puran told the court that there was no document with his client’s name “assigned” to it. He subsequently applied for bail.
Faria was granted bail in the sum of $1M and next appears in court on October 19.
