As the saying goes it was déjà vu all over again as defending champions Alpha United once again finished in the top position in this year’s Cellink Plus Premier League competition on Friday at the Tucville Playfield.
Alpha United successfully defended their title for the third year making it four consecutive title triumphs after the final whistle of the tournament was blown on Friday at the Tucville Playfield.
The defending champions accumulated 37 points which came from 12 wins with one draw and a loss to claim the $500,000 first prize.
Camptown finished in second place on 28 points while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was third on 26 points and Fruta Conquerors, fourth, with 24 points.
Pele improved one spot from last year to finish in fifth place with 22 points while BK International Western Tigers was sixth with 15 points.
Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Flamingo were seventh and eighth respectively with six and three points and will be the two teams facing relegation to the First Division League.
In Friday’s encounters, Western Tigers devoured Flamingo 5 – 0 in a one-sided affair while Alpha United got past Camptown 2 – 1 in the feature encounter.
Alpha scored as early as the 12th minute through Kelvin Smith and was able to score again on the brink of half-time compliments of Dwayne Jacobs.
Camptown found themselves immediately under pressure at the commencement of the second half being two goals down as the three-time champions showed no signs of letting up.
However, some hope was spread throughout the Camptown contingent when Devon Mosley scored in the 53rd minute and made it a one possession game but Alpha was able to defend their one goal lead to go home victorious.
