A 37-year-old farmer who allegedly stole a motor car valued $2M was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on October 2 at Georgetown, Drepaul Persaud of Lot 1 New Aanlegt, West Bank Demerara stole one AT 192 motor car valued $2M property of Amarnauth Ramsook.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by the Acting Chief Magistrate.
When given a chance to respond, the defendant would only tell the court that he is not guilty. The VC was not present in court.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) had gone to the GuyExpo activities and had parked his car outside of the Sophia Exhibition Site. Upon his [the VC’s], return however, he noticed that his car was gone.
The prosecution added that the accused then travelled to Berbice with the car and was involved in an accident. Police arriving on the scene of the accident identified the car to be that belonging to the VC.
After conducting investigations, the defendant was later arrested and charged. The prosecution requested that Persaud be denied bail stating that he is not a first-time offender and has matters pending in court.
The prosecution’s request was granted and the unrepresented Persaud was later remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to Court Three for October 19.
