A fisherman who reportedly fought with and robbed a woman of items totalling $12,500 was on Tuesday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
On October 2 at Georgetown, Seon Jackson of 29 Goed Fortuin, West Coast Demerara allegedly robbed Rohini Durga of items valued $12,500 and at the same time or sometime after he used personal violence on the complainant.
The 23-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate. When given a chance to speak, the defendant declined.
The virtual complainant (VC) told the court that on the day in question, she was heading to Gafoors when the accused accosted her from behind and tried to snatch her shoulder bag. She said that she resisted and he began hitting her to the face and about the body.
She added that moments after the man had run away with her belongings, he was captured with the aid of public-spirited citizens and a mobile police patrol in the area. He was later arrested and charged with the offence.
The prosecution told the court that some of the items belonging to the VC were found on the accused.
The unrepresented Jackson was later remanded to prison and ordered to return to court on October 20.
