DELHI, India, CMC – On the back of terrific half-centuries from Virender Sehwag and Dinesh Karthik, efficient Delhi Daredevils easily beat Wayamba by 50 runs in their Champions League Twenty20 Group D match at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium yesterday.
Batting first, the Daredevils scored 170 for five off their 20 overs and restricted the Sri Lankan club side to 120 for seven off their allotted overs.
Man of the match Sehwag set the tone by blasting 66 off 42 balls with 10 fours and one six at the top of the Daredevils’ innings and Karthik, batting at No.4, smashed 61 off 41 balls with five fours and three sixes.
Sehwag was eventually run out with Delhi on 112 for three in the 15th over.
“I think I batted really well because the wicket was staying low. It’s very difficult for a stroke player but they bowled a lot of loose balls,” Sehwag said.
“Wherever I tried to hit fours and sixes I found it,” added Sehwag.
The Indian opener posted a match-winning 67 for the third wicket with Karthik and the pair reversed the recent trend of low scoring on the Kotla pitch.
Opening bowler Chanaka Welegedera, with two for 24 off his four overs, was Wayamba’s best bowler and the tricky spinner Ajantha Mendis, with two for 35 off four, also had some success.
Wayamba lost wickets steadily from early in their innings and were in strife on 36 for five after eight overs.
Australian pacer Dirk Nannes grabbed key wickets including star batsman Mahela Jayawardene (53) and the Sri Lankans never threatened the target.
Nannes finished with four for 24 off four overs.
The 39-year-old Glen McGrath, showing he still has high quality as a pacer in spite of his retirement from international cricket, bowled splendidly.
