PC emerges victorious
President’s College (PC) left the competition in its wake when it beat its nearest rival Golden Grove by 140 points in the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Upper East Coast Inter Schools championships held last Friday.
PC ended the championships on 700 points with Golden Grove finishing a distant second on 560 points. Cove and John Secondary School rounded out the podium positions with 300 points.
Hampton Games silver medallist Ornesta Thomas of Ann’s Grove Community High School and a member of the Enmore Athletics Club maintained his dominance in the one lap sprint and the middle distances events. Thomas, in the under-14 category, ran the 400m in 1:01.30s, the 800m in 2:12.25s and the 1500m in 6:10.20s. He beat Golden Grove’s Melon Peterkin (1:09.25) in the 400m and Shaquelle Everseley of Cove and John in the 800m and 1500m.
PC’s Sherwin Mickle ran away with the sprint double beating Calvin Belgrave of Ann’s Grove into second position in the under-16 category. Belgrave however, took the 400m event when he beat Shaquelle Adonis who placed second. On the distaff side Oceana Mingo took the gold in the U-16 100m.
In the Under-20 category Golden Grove’s Candida Walrond beat PC’s reigning champion Treasure James in the Women’s 100m while PC’s Mark McLean won the 100m in an unimpressive time of 11.25s in the same category.
In other results Keith Gordon of Golden Grove won the 5000m and Steven Harris took the 800m event.
Fourteen schools participated in the championships. The Inter-Branch competition will also be held at the Enmore Community Centre from October 20-23.
