A 52-year-old tailor accused of receiving four stolen car rims from another was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that between July 24 and August 31 at Georgetown, Clive Bowman of 167 Da Silva Street, Newtown, Georgetown received from a person or persons, four car rims valued $4,000, knowing same to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge of receiving stolen article when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
When given a chance to respond, the defendant told the court that he had no idea that the rims he had bought were stolen. He explained that a “respectable” man had approached him with an offer of $25,000 for the four rims, he said that he bought the rims not having a clue that they had belonged to someone else. He added that he did not do any thorough inspection of the articles received.
The virtual complainant (VC) explained that he was able to identify the rims as his because he had engraved his registration number on them. He went on to say that his entire car was stolen from in front of the GCC ground at Bourda sometime in July. He has since never found his vehicle.
After identifying the rims as his, the VC said that the police were summoned and an arrest was made.
Bowman was later placed on $40,000 bail. He was ordered to return to Court Six on November 5.
