A 50-year-old taxi driver accused of causing the death of a man by dangerous driving was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court.
The allegation is that on October 11 at Georgetown, Tyrone Lovell of 48 Sixth Avenue, Bartica drove motor car HB 5209 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Alfred Cameron.
The father of one was not required to plead to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving when it was read to him by the acting Chief Magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson who represented the defendant told the court that the 78-year-old was walking directly in the path of the oncoming car.
“The deceased was apparently visually impaired, my worship, thus explaining why he was walking in the path of my client’s vehicle,” Thompson said.
The lawyer then made an application that his client be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no previous antecedents, has a fixed place of abode, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating fully with the police in their investigations.
The prosecution told the court however that the deceased was in good health and had no complaint of being visually impaired, adding that the accident was caused because the defendant was speeding.
The prosecutor objected to the bail application made by the attorney on the ground that it is highly likely that the defendant may not return to court to stand trial if granted bail.
Lovell was subsequently remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for October 30.
