DELHI, India, CMC – Cape Cobras collapsed to a 30-run loss to Delhi Daredevils yesterday but still finished second in League B and will now clash with red hot Trinidad & Tobago in the second semi-final of the Twenty20 Champions League on Thursday. Choosing to field after winning the toss, they limited Delhi to 114 for six but then capitulated spectacularly to be bundled out for 84 with nine balls to spare in the final Super 8 match at Feroz Shah Kotla.
Cape Cobras, one of the form teams in the competition, never recovered from the loss of opener Herschelle Gibbs without scoring to the second ball of the opening over and plunged to the lowest total of the inaugural tournament.
Reeling on 17 for two in the fourth over, Henry Davids and JP Duminy came together in a rescue attempt worth 27 from 26 balls.
Davids hit 22 from 29 balls with one four and a six while Duminy cracked two fours in 14 from 20 balls, but failed to provide the momentum their side needed.
While Davids was run out, leg-spinner Amit Mishra (2-19) claimed the wickets of Rory Kleinveldt (8) and Duminy in the space of three balls in the 11th over to leave Cape Cobras tottering on 57 for five.
Pacer Dirk Nannes (3-19) and off-spinners Tillakaratne Dilshan (2-16) and Yogesh Nagar (2-9) ensured there would be no recovery.
Earlier, Delhi limped to four for two in the second over before they were hauled around by two crucial partnerships.
Dinesh Karthik stroked 23 from 24 balls and Manoj Tiwary (19) put on 40 for the third wicket to rally the innings before falling within five balls of each other, leaving Delhi struggling at 46 for four in the 10th over.
Top scorer Owais Shah hit 39 from 38 balls and posted 34 for the fifth wicket with Nagar (10), to ease the tension. Off-spinner Justin Ontong (2-8) and medium pacer Kleinveldt (2-31) finished with two wickets apiece.
