The body of a 56-year-old Brazilian, who police say died after a boat collision in the Cuyuni River, was found in the Ekereku River on Monday afternoon.
Bispa De Santos, according to a police press release, was a Brazilian who resided in Venezuela. The man, police said, was travelling in a 30 feet by 6 feet boat propelled by a Yamaha 75 horse power engine when it collided with an 18 feet by 2 feet boat.
There were four other occupants in De Santos’ boat and the other vessel contained a lone occupant. The collision occurred at about 6.45 pm last Friday and the body was removed from the river at approximately 5 pm Monday.
Commander of Police E and F Division Louis Crawford, speaking to this newspaper last evening, said that the boat carrying De Santos and other four individuals was “steel” and “not a wooden vessel”. Crawford could not say whether the four persons in De Santos’ boat were Guyanese but indicated that they were all miners.
“They’re all miners,” Crawford reported. “They have given their statements to the police and they have been released.”
Asked what the parties involved in the collision were doing on the river Crawford said he was not in a position to provide such information.
