PAARL, South Africa, CMC – West Indies Women’s coach Sherwin Campbell is hoping his side will rally to save their One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa after a second consecutive loss yesterday.
South Africa scored an authoritative seven-wicket victory in the third Women’s ODI at Boland Bank Park to take an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the four-match series that ends tomorrow.
“The final match will be crucial as we need to bounce back and level the series,” Campbell said.
After winning the first match on Friday by five wickets behind a maiden ODI century from Stafanie Taylor, West Indies lost game two by seven wickets and the South Africans posted a similar result yesterday to leave West Indies needing a win tomorrow to avoid a series loss.
“We have the players who can do it and even though we are behind, we are still confident of achieving a victory in the last match,” Campbell said.
“We are disappointed with the way we lost. Several players got decent starts but failed to carry on and we need to show improvement in the final match. We need to concentrate harder and stick to the basics,” Campbell said.
The coach praised Taylor for continuing her positive approach at the top of the order. She was the match-winner in the first match with a career-best 108.
“Stafanie has been batting really well and continues to show how it should be done at this level and what is required to succeed.”
Campbell was also happy with the bowling of 17-year-old leg-spinner Shemaine Campbelle in her first international match.
She did not take a wicket in her eight overs, but conceded just 24 runs for a tidy economy rate.
