PAARL, South Africa, CMC – Form player Stafanie Taylor stroked a brisk half century but could not stop South Africa from recording an authoritative seven-wicket victory in the third Women’s One Day International (ODI) yesterday.
Cri-zelda Brits hit a well measured unbeaten half-century that steered the home side to 163 for three off 40.4 overs in response to the weak West Indies score of 160 all out in 49.1 overs at Boland Bank Park.
The result gave South Africa back-to-back wins and an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the four-match series.
Sent to bat, West Indies lost the hard-hitting Deandra Dottin (5) cheaply in the fourth over and the veteran Pamela Lavine (8) at 51 for two in the 13th over while Taylor made steady progress and tried to build the Caribbean side’s innings.
Taylor, who scored a century in the West Indies’ five-wicket win in the first ODI on Friday, eventually fell for 66 off 73 balls with nine boundaries.
Stacy-Ann King (19), Cordel Jack (17) and rookie Britney Cooper (14) were the only others getting to double figures as medium pacer Shandre Fritz proved effective with three for 11 off 5.1 overs.
The 16-year-old leg-spinner Dane van Niekerk (3-37) and pacer Charlize van der Westhuizen (2-31) shared five wickets for the South Africans, who made easy work of the run chase and repeated the easy win – by seven wickets — they had in the second ODI on Sunday.
Brits scored 60 not out off 105 balls with five boundaries, while Trisha Chetty, who posted 50 for the first wicket with Kirstie Thomson (27), struck 42 off 82 balls.
Player of the match Brits and Chetty added 86 runs for the second wicket and killed the slim West Indies hopes.
Mignon du Preez was run out by Shanel Daley for 12 just before they achieved victory with 56 balls to spare.
King, with her left-arm medium pace, bowled well for West Indies with one for six off five overs and another left-arm medium pacer Shanel Daley (1-20) was the only other wicket-taker.
Taylor and rookie medium pacer Shemaine Campbell bowled economically without taking wickets, each finishing with none for 24 off eight overs.
The fourth and final ODI will be played tomorrow before the two teams play three Twenty20 Internationals.
