Waitresses carted off $1.6M

Two waitresses from the Li Yu Men Chinese Restaurant at Bush Lot, West Berbice have been taken into custody at the Fort Wellington station after they reportedly stole $1.5M and US$600 from their employers on Wednesday night.

Police have recovered almost $600,000 among some bushes behind the home of one of the waitress who has since confessed to the crime. The women were employed by Yufount Loian, 40 and her husband, Yang Zhnojun, 40.

Three Chinese passports and one Guyana passport and other restaurant documents were also stolen but they have not been recovered.

Reports are that the women removed a box containing the money and the documents from a bedroom adjoining the restaurant. They had reportedly picked up the key to the bedroom after the owner rested it down.

Sources said that one of the waitresses passed the box off to a friend who took it to her [waitress’s] mother and they later split up the cash. The women who colluded with each other continued working as if nothing happened.

They left as usual at around 9 pm with their handbags and it was not until after 10 pm when the owner closed up his business that the money was discovered missing.

The owner immediately made a report to the Fort Wellington station and ranks went to the women’s homes and promptly arrested them.
