Roman Catholic Bishop Francis Alleyne was last Sunday relieved of his cell phone when two men, one armed with a knife, attacked and robbed him near St Roses High School.
According to the Catholic Standard, apart from losing his cell phone and being shaken, Bishop Alleyne was otherwise unhurt.
Bishop Alleyne was out of town yesterday when this newspaper tried to contact him.
The newspaper said the Bishop was walking from Bishops’ House to the Georgetown Public Hospital last Sunday morning to visit his office assistant Curtis Daniels who is a patient there when the incident occurred.
He told the Catholic Standard that two well dressed men cycled pass him then turned around and rode straight at him. The man on the crossbar jumped off, grabbed the Bishop by his collar and threw him to the ground.
The Bishop further related to the Standard that he attempted to fight back with his attackers but one produced a knife at which point he surrendered and told his assailants to go ahead.
The men then went through his pockets and took his cell phone. He said he was carrying nothing else of value, except perhaps his wristwatch which was not taken.
The Catholic Standard reported that a passerby stopped to render assistance but the thugs got back on their bicycle and rode off. The Bishop said his greatest loss was all of the information he had stored in the cell phone.
“However, in one sense it is not a bad thing to go through something like that because many people experience a lot worse,” Bishop Francis was quoted by the Standard as saying.
