The GECOM Secretariat hosted a two-day strategic meeting last week with registration officers aimed at bringing them up-to-date with the preparations for conducting local government elections.
In a press release GECOM said the two-day meeting also revisited the officers’ roles and responsibilities. Other objectives included: addressing issues related to the demarcation of boundaries for the constituencies within the respective local government areas; providing the officers with sufficient guidance related to the distribution of ID cards and engaging the officers with Civic and Voter Education strategies for the distribution of ID cards and the conduct of local government elections.
In his opening remarks Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally underscored the need for all ID distribution staff and registration officers in particular, to observe due diligence while executing their duties. He said the success of the exercise depends heavily on the ID distribution staff as they are GECOM’s frontline personnel. He said too it’s an important precursor to conducting the Claims and Objections exercise as well as for the holding of elections.
The release said other resource persons who attended the workshop were Chief Election Officer Gocool Boodoo, Deputy Chief Election Officer Calvin Benn, Assistant Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield and Civic and Voter Education Manager Deolall Ramlall.
This meeting was held at the Umana Yana.
