Old records crumbled as Mervyn ‘Spongy’ Moses and Randolph Morgan powered their way to new ones at the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) senior championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday.
The event, which was also used to guage the association’s efficiency to hold the 4th Caribbean Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships next year, saw Moses powering his way to the best lifter title at the championships with a total of 1208 wilks competing in the 75kg class.
Morgan, the Caribbean’s best lifter competing in the 82.5kg class, placed second with 1136 wilks while Winston Stoby, who placed third, accumulated 972 wilks.
Morgan also broke a 19 year old record twice yesterday in the deadlift.
The record which once stood at 639 ¼ pounds was reset to 644 ¼ pounds and eventually taken to 650 pounds.
Morgan broke the record on his second attempt. Moses also deadlifted 606 lbs to set a new record in the 75kg weight class on his third attempt.
In other results, Wazim Immamdeen won the 60kg weight class with Marcus Beete placing second and Tariq Immamdeen, third. Wazim Immamdeen also set a record in the deadlift on his third attempt with a lift of 485lbs.
In the 67.5 kg Mohammed Rossan placed first with a total of 946 wilks, Kelvin Lewis was second 940.17 wilks and Paul Adams third with 923 wilks.
