Robin Persaud won the feature 25-lap race dethroning last year’s winner Marlon “Fishy” Williams at the 12th Annual Troy Humphrey Memorial 10-race Cycle programme held Saturday around the inner circuit of the National Park.
Persaud secured victory in a time of 58 minutes, 24 seconds from a strong field. He also carted off two sprint prizes.
Williams, who is currently campaigning in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago and is a member of Roraima Bikers Club, returned to participate in the programme which also featured former National cyclist US-based Randy Toussaint who rode in the veterans category.
The programme also saw the return of national cyclist Jude Bentley who was recently reinstated to ride locally following a ban by the Guyana Cycling Federation.
Second position in the feature race was secured by Junior Niles with veteran Raymond Newton occupying the third place, Ian Jackson (fourth), Jaikarran Sukhai (fifth) and Jamal Nichols (sixth).
Jackson also claimed two sprint prizes while there was one apiece for Marlon Williams, Chris Persaud, Sukhai and Enzo Matthews.
Christopher Holder was in a dominant mood in the Juniors and Juveniles 10-lap race in securing victory and clinching all five sprint prizes up for grabs.
Second position went to Kurt La Rose with Dellon Gesa claiming third and Regan Gibbons fourth.
Linden Blackman was the winner of the veterans under-50 four-lap race from Virgil Jones and Kennard Lovell.
Toussaint was the winner of the veterans over 50 four-lap from Monty Parris and Aubrey Greavesande.
The upright five-lap race was won by Richard Charles followed by Kester Croal and Nigel Jacobs.
The BMX Open four-lap was a “King affair” with Mario King winning from Marlon King and Orlando King, while the winner of the BMX boys 12-14 three-lap race was won by Davanand Bissoon from Mark Harris and Akeem Lakon.
Raymond Perez won the boys’ 9-12 race from Darius Ramsammy and Christopher Griffith with Crystal Blackman being the lone participant in the girls BMX 6-12.
The Boys 6-9 BMX was won by Nicolas Nandan from Kevin Singh and Keion Harris.
The competing cyclists were awarded cash prizes donated by Vernon George Humphrey and family of Humphrey’s Bakery.
Relatives of the Humphrey family assisted in the presentation of prizes at the programme held in honour of former National cyclist Troy Humphrey who died in a motor vehicle accident in the prime of his cycling career.
Brian Allen, President of Roraima Bikers Club, the organizers of the event told Stabroek Sport that the programme was well attended and he was extremely pleased to see Marlon Williams returning to ride on local soil and the presence of one of Guyana ‘s top cyclists Randolph Toussaint.
Riders from Roraima Bikers Club also received special financial incentives they included Darren Allen, Jude Bentley, Orvin Hinds, Royston Anderson, Darrel Peters, Monty Parris and Virgil Jones.
