Ramenaught Bisram, who served as vice-chairman of the Essequibo Islands/West Demerara region from 1992 to 2006 was discovered with stab wounds to his abdomen and face. Police said in a statement that the death of the 55-year-old man is being investigated.
Bisram’s body was discovered around 4.30 pm yesterday by his brother-in-law. The body was naked and lying on the floor of his bedroom. A blood-stained kitchen knife was found next to the body.
Bisram also appeared to have been robbed. A relative told this newspaper that two rings he usually wore were missing while a briefcase was found open, close to his body.
While this is being investigated, a police source told this newspaper that the four-bedroom home did not appear to have been ransacked.
The former regional official was retired and lived alone. His wife and children reside overseas. The man’s brother-in-law, Walter said the back door of the home was open and he entered and subsequently found Bisram with his face slashed, lying on the bedroom floor. Walter said that following the discovery, he contacted the police. He said that he last saw his brother-in-law on Friday.
Current Region Three Chairman, Julius Faerber, who viewed the body, said that there was a wound to the left side of Bisram’s abdomen and his intestines were protruding. He said last evening that the body was also surrounded by pools of blood. The regional chairman stated that a nearby suitcase appeared to have been ransacked.
Faerber recalled that Bisram served as regional vice-chairman from 1992 to 2006 and since retiring, he became involved in community work and was a patron of the area’s cricket club. He was devoted to his religion and also farmed, Faerber said.
It was not clear when Bisram was killed but this newspaper was told that he was last seen on Sunday afternoon.
A large number of villagers gathered outside the home last evening and waited for police crime scene investigators to arrive.
The body was finally removed at around 8 pm. Two former drivers of Bisram were also present and they described him as an “easy-going person”. Relatives said that Bisram had no problems with his health except for his sight.
Bisram was the father of four and would sometimes visit his family in the US, relatives said. He had only completed building his home at Canal Number Two last December.
The body was taken to the West Demerara Hospital Mortuary. Police investigations are continuing.
