Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday granted a 29-year-old man bail when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stabbing another man when a drug transaction between him and the man’s girlfriend fell through.
Marlon Gobin of 113 Pike Street, Kitty, pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful wounding.
He denied that on October 27 at Shell Road, Kitty, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Paul Smith. However, Gobin stated that Smith and his girlfriend had robbed him of $200.
He said that on the day in question “she (Smith’s girlfriend) deh tell me that she need a raise foh buy weed” and after several minutes of nagging him for the money he eventually gave it to her.
He went on to say that she had told him that she would return to him with the marijuana.
Gobin noted that several minutes later, he saw Smith and his girlfriend walking past him and when he inquired about what the girlfriend had done with the money Smith told him that “$200 is flat” and that he shouldn’t ask for it back.
He said that he got annoyed and voiced his displeasure at the situation which resulted in Smith dealing him several blows about his body. He said that he then retaliated and Smith sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Kevin London stated that the matter was a very serious one where Smith had to be treated at the hospital and then sent home.
He stated that on the day in question, Gobin and Smith’s girlfriend had an arrangement for her to buy marijuana for him, but the arrangement fell through.
He explained that Gobin had given Smith’s girlfriend the money to purchase the marijuana but she bought cocaine instead.
He said that Smith’s girlfriend had consumed all of the cocaine, much to Gobin’s displeasure and that sparked the incident.
London noted that Gobin had used a knife to stab Smith several times about his body. He further stated that Gobin’s bail should be set at a substantial amount.
The magistrate subsequently granted Gobin bail in the sum of $30, 000 and ordered that he return to court on December 2.
