Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday remanded to prison a 24-year-old man, while she granted his brother bail when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court over the Albouystown feud that left one man dead and his cousin injured.
Carl Bennett, a father of one of 148 Cooper Street, Albouystown, who stood in the dock of the court clad only in black trousers and wearing a blank expression, was informed by the magistrate that he was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of murder.
It is alleged that on October 24 at Albouystown, he murdered Marvin Boston.
Meanwhile, his brother Cordell Bennett, 25, of James Street, Albouystown, who appeared in court later yesterday afternoon entered a not guilty plea to the charge of assault causing bodily harm.
He denied that on the same day and place he unlawfully assaulted Boston’s cousin, Renee Williams, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
Carl’s lawyer, Nigel Hughes, stated that his client was the victim of an unfortunate incident.
The lawyer stated that at the time of the tragedy his client was holding his nine-month-old baby in his hands as he was following his wife to catch a bus.
The lawyer noted that “my client is the innocent victim here,” adding that he was the one who was attacked.
Meanwhile, Cordell told the court that on the day in question he and Carl had gone to confront Williams who had a conflict with Carl earlier that day.
He said that Boston and Williams had attacked his brother and he had gotten into the fight to defend his brother since “I couldn’t just stand up and see me younger brother get hurt.” He said that during the ruckus, Williams was also injured.
The Magistrate then placed Cordell on bail in the sum of $25,000.
The two matters were then transferred to Court Two for November 16.
Reports are that just before 7 am last Saturday, Cordell and Carl, stormed the Boston family’s home at 138 King Edward Street, Albouystown, to challenge Williams to a fight. Boston, rushing to the aid of Williams, got involved in the fracas minutes later and was stabbed multiple times. He reportedly bled internally and succumbed within minutes of being rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Meanwhile the Bennett brothers were subsequently detained at the public hospital when they turned up for treatment since they both had sustained injuries during the confrontation.
