The two East Coast of Demerara (ECD) fishermen, who went missing on Wednesday night along with the boat they were working on, Prince Omar, which was attacked by pirates, were yesterday morning found drifting in the vessel off the Corentyne Coast.
According to reports reaching this newspaper, the two men: Kamalodeen Nazrudeen aka ‘Micky’, 32, of Good Hope, ECD, and another fisherman Bevan Wickam,35, known as ’Brown’ of Bare Root, also on the ECD, were found by a search team which ventured out to sea yesterday. The men were unharmed when they were found.
The two men were part of a five-member crew who were attacked by pirates at an area known as Caroni, in Suriname waters around 7 pm on Wednesday night. The pirates placed their colleagues, the Prince Omar’s captain, Suresh, 29 year old Venkataragvan Raghunauth of Triumph, ECD and 39 year- -old Shaheed Ahmad in another vessel, whose occupants were also attacked but who were unharmed.
They were subsequently rescued by another fishing vessel and were taken to the Nickerie area in Suriname where they sought medical treatment before travelling to Georgetown late Thursday afternoon as a search was launched for their colleagues, Nazrudeen and Wickam.
Their relatives told Stabroek News yesterday afternoon that they were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their family members who were expected to travel from the Corentyne area to their ECD homes last evening. The two men’s wives told this newspaper yesterday that their husbands were in good health yesterday, noting that they were thankful to the Almighty for bringing their partners to safety.
