Rain washes out three second round matches

— President’s Cup Regional One Dayers…
Hosts Guyana benefited from the largesse of their own fickle weather pattern as only one of three scheduled second round matches of the West Indies Cricket Board sponsored President’s Cup limited overs competition was played yesterday.

At the Albion Community Development Centre Ground hosts Guyana strolled to a seven-wicket win over Barbados and a place in the semi-finals even as rain wreaked havoc with the other second round matches and remains a threat to the success of the tournament.

At the Providence National Stadium, the game had barely gotten underway before persistent rainfall forced the players off the field and following an inspection by the umpires after lunch the game was abandoned at approximately 2pm.

It was a cruel setback for the two teams both of whom had lost their opening round matches the Leewards to Guyana and the U-19s to Barbados and all but eliminated their chances of reaching the semi-final.

After the Leeward Islands won the toss and elected to bat openers Kieran Powell and Chesney Hughes put on 37 for the first wicket in only six overs before rain interrupted the proceedings.

Powell was unbeaten on a quick fire 31 which was laced with seven fours while Hughes was on three at the other end.
W.I Under-19 opening seamers, Kelbert Walters and Keon Joseph, bowled three overs each and went for 14 and 21 runs, respectively.

All rained out! Match Referee Grantley Culbard, left along with umpires Clancy Mack, second left and Dhieranidranath Somwaru officially indicate to Windward Islands captain Darren Sammy, sitting left and Daren Ganga that there would be no further activity in the match. (Rawle Toney photo)

The West Indies U-19, preparing for next year’s International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup competition had made several changes to the side which played against Barbados bringing in Jason Holder, Trevon Griffith, Dalton Polius, Keith Walters, Jomel Warrican and Keon Joseph for Kraigg Braithwaite, Akeem Dewar, Jermaine Blackwood, Nelson Bolan, Nicholas Gordon and Patrick Harty.

AT BOURDA
At the world famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground, Bourda a fascinating contest between Jamaica and the Combined Campuses and Colleges was cut short by the weather.

Deciding to bat first upon winning the toss the CCC team was pegged back by fast bowler Jerome Taylor’s two wicket strike in the first over which left them on 4-2.
Taylor clean bowled Omar Phillips with the first ball of the match and then removed Simon Jackson lbw after the batsman had struck him for four.
However Romel Currency and Nekoli Parris, weathered the storm (pardon the pun) and took the CCC team to 41-2 at the interruption.
Parris was not out on 16 from 40 balls which included two fours while Currency was unbeaten on 10 from 30 balls.

Rain continued to fall intermittently throughout and umpires Clyde Duncan and Dalton Holder were forced to call off play finally at 1.45pm.

AT UITVLUGHT
And, at Utivlught, play between defending champions Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands was called off without a ball being bowled.
While the result will not affect Trinidad all that much it will surely reduce the Windwards chances of reaching the semi-final following their one-run defeat to the CC team in Wednesday’s opening encounter.
