Dhaneshwar Tumeshwar also known as Scott who sustained a bullet wound when his family was robbed on Saturday evening is said to be in a stable condition in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The 46-year-old man of Corentyne, Berbice was wounded in the chest.
The family was robbed of cash in excess of $500,000 and jewellery totalling $5 million. The bandits who attacked the family were masked and it is believed that they were watching the movements of their victims before they attacked.
Relating what she was told happened, the eldest daughter Vindiya Tumeshwar said that the bandits struck minutes to six last Saturday while her mother was in the kitchen and her father was about to take a shower.
Three masked bandits had entered the house, she said, and after robbing her mother of the jewellery she was wearing, were demanding more. She said that her father, who heard his wife pleading, decided to investigate what the commotion was. On entering the room he was shot once to the chest by one of the bandits.
Leaving the wounded man there, the bandits then proceed to the upper flat of the house where they disconnected the telephone line, Vindiya said, and then proceeded to ransack the rooms. She said that all this time the bandits had her mother with them and continued to demand more loot. Her mother, she said, was hit several times with the butt of the gun by the bandits.
Vindiya said they suspected that the men were watching her family’s movements since they asked her 12-year-old brother during the attack where his sisters were. She said when her brother told them that they didn’t live there he was also dealt a blow by one of the bandits.
Vindiya said that she and her sister do not live with their family.
After he was struck the blow, she said, her brother hid behind the door as the bandits continued their search through the house.
No one was able to identify the men who fled after robbing the family. The police were called after the robbery occurred.
The family, Vindiya said, was still pretty shaken up and her mother has not since returned to the home.
They are now hoping that her father’s condition continues to improve.
