Police Constable Esan Grimes was remanded to prison on Thursday for allegedly having sex with a schoolgirl.
The policeman was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of carnal knowledge when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The case was transferred to Court Six for November 12.
It is alleged that between October 20 and November 4, he had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15. His lawyer, Mark Waldron, applied for bail for him stating that his client will return to court if released.
However, Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana objected to the bail application on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence, adding that if released Grimes might interfere with the girl. The prosecutor also argued that taking into consideration the penalty that is attached to such cases if a person is found guilty, Grimes might not return to court for trial if released.
