The top four teams of the recently-concluded Georgetown Football Association (GFA) organized, Western Union First Division League were awarded for their performances in Western Union’s main branch building yesterday.
Western Union’s Marketing Manager, Nateeah King took the opportunity to congratulate both the winners of the tournament and the GFA.
“We would like to express our appreciation to the GFA for planning and executing this tournament for us. I must say we are very thankful and we look forward to their continued support in 2010,” King said. “I think that we got the mileage we were looking for and it is something we would like to see happen next year,” she further stated.
King added that she hopes the teams that were not able to come out on top exhort the discipline in sport that is needed to take them a step further in the football arena.
President of the GFA, Troy Mendonca stated that they were very appreciative of the partnership with Western Union and that they were able to run a very smooth and competitive tournament with the support of the sponsor.
“Their support not only provided rivalry among players but it assisted in keeping youngsters involved in an organized sport that assists in keeping them away from social ills we face daily” Mendonca implied.
He said “we would like to implore football administrators to use the opportunity provided by Western Union of having competitions played to implement the principles upon which football is run so that their team can grow from strength to strength.”
On a closing note Mendonca highlighted that while it might be a social responsibility for Western Union to give back to the public through sponsorship and donates, person must also continue to support their services so that they can continue to contribute.
Riddim Squad, who emerged as the tournament champions received $150,000 while the runners up, Santos FC claimed $75,000.
The other top two finishers were Uprising (third) and Huston Stars (fourth) and they carted off with $50,000 and $25,000 respectively.
Santos’ Michael Pedro, with eight goals was the tournament’s leading goal scorer while Riddim Squad’s Dorville Stewart and Sherwin Hope were adjudged as the Best Goal Keeper and Most Valuable Player (MVP), respectively.
