A search team was yesterday unable to retrieve the body suspected to be that of 23-year-old Aliya Bulkan who leapt over the Kaieteur Falls on Saturday morning.
According to an army source “it is a huge challenge for the special forces.”
Yesterday Aliya’s mother Kamini Bulkan told Stabroek News that the team had not been able to get to the body and that her husband was still part of the effort.
Army sources told Stabroek News that additional ranks were flown in yesterday and despite a minor setback they were able to continue the journey. The source said the body is stuck between two rocks and so will remain in that position until it is removed.
“The guys out there are very well trained but it’s hard for them but they are trying their best,” the source said.
A Korean woman who was part of the tour party had witnessed Aliya running and screaming and then plunging off the waterfall.
Aliya only recently graduated from a US university and relatives said that they found it difficult to believe that she ended her life since she was not depressed.
The only problem she had, according to her relatives, was not securing a job in the US.
