BASSETERRE, St Kitts, CMC – West Indies team manager Pat Greenidge believes her side’s trouncing of England in both the one-day and Twenty20 series, has gotten the attention of other teams in women’s international cricket.
“The team has done exceptionally well. This is a truly great victory. The entire team is elated and very proud,” an elated Greenidge said Tuesday after the Windies pulled off a comfortable five-wicket win to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match series.
“We have beaten the No. 1 team in the world in four out of five games and that says a lot. Other teams around the world will definitely be looking at us now and we know we have to continue the good work.”
The victory followed on the heels of a solid four-wicket win at Warner Park in the first Twenty20 International of the series.
On Saturday, West Indies also clinched the three-match One-Day International series when they won the decisive third match by one wicket in a thriller at the same venue.
England entered the series as favourites, especially carrying the tag of reigning 50-over and T20 champions.
Greenidge said the squad was developing well as international cricketers and were coming to grips with the requirements at the top level of competition.
“The girls are maturing as cricketers. They all understand what is required to perform at the international level,” she explained.
“We were confident when we left South Africa last month that we could beat England and we have maintained our good performances since we returned home.
“Our players have the natural ability and what we are seeing now is them turning that into performances.”
The successes in both series are being seen by the West Indies Cricket Board as a major boost for women’s cricket in the region as the Caribbean prepares to host the ICC World T20 Championship next year.
