A 43-year-old man accused of stealing scrap metal valued in excess of $1M was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The allegation is that on November 9 at Georgetown, Quacy Peters, a cart operator of 53 Princes Street, Lodge, stole items valued $1.2M, property of Deokanan Nassi.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by the acting chief magistrate.
When given a chance to respond, the defendant told the court that on the day in question, he had been hired by two men to transport a quantity of metal from the VC’s premises to an Alberttown location. While running the errand, Peters said that he was stopped by a mobile police patrol who invited him to the police station for questioning.
He said that he was later arrested and charged for the offence.
The virtual complainant (VC) was not in court.
Police Prosecutor Kevin London told the court, however, that after being stopped by the mobile police patrol, the accused could not provide any reasonable information for being in possession of the items.
London further stated that based on information received, the lawmen found out that the items were stolen from the VC’s home.
The prosecutor said that all of the items had been recovered and he had no objection to bail.
