The burnt pump that resulted in a water shortage at the West Demerara Secondary School has been fixed according to school officials.
The headmistress of the institution said that it had been rectified “a long time ago”. She refused to say anything further because, according to her, she did not know who she was speaking to on the telephone. The Chairman of the School’s Parent-Teachers Association when contacted also said that the pump had been fixed.
There is now running water in the bathrooms, she stated. A parent of a student, who attends the school, had earlier said that the situation has been ongoing for a year and a half. Some students had told this newspaper that since the start of the school term, there was no running water in their washrooms. However, occasionally there was water but only a couple of times a week and sometimes they fetched from a tap at the front of the school. Most times, however there is not enough to flush the toilets, this newspaper was told.
Fifth form students had written a letter to the Headmistress outlining several issues of concern including the toilets, electricity and overflowing bins. They later met with her and she explained that the problems would have been fixed.
