– Yassin to meet with GABA
President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) K. Juman-Yassin is to meet with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) sometime next week to discuss the possibility of sending a number of amateur boxers to Cuba.
Yassin yesterday told Stabroek Sport that he will meet with GABA on Tuesday to discuss sending three our four boxers to Cuba for six to eight months.
He also said that he was concerned over recent developments within the association and will seek to have discussions with current GABA executives including acting president Eustace Cuffy.
Yassin said a number of factors would have to be taken into consideration when selecting the boxers to go to Cuba including whether the boxers would be willing to go to Cuba for an extended period. “Those who will be selected will have to be away from Guyana for awhile,” he said.
He also opined that the boxers selected must be among the cream of top performers in the country.
He raised the issue of the boxers turning professional shortly after their return.
“I’m very concerned whether the amateur boxers would want to turn pro,” adding that the boxers might be required to sign agreements prior to being selected. According to Yassin the decision to send a couple of Simon Pures to Cuba was taken due to the fact that it was the considered opinion that the current crop of amateur boxers did not have too much experience and that Guyana intends to compete at two major games next year the Commonwealth Games and the GAC games.
Yassin also revealed that Dr. Rohan Jabour had been selected to attend a Sports Medicine Course in Guadalajara, Mexico next week.
Earlier this year Dr David Samaroo attended another Sports Medicine Course at Stanford University in the USA.
