KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – After being axed from Jamaica’s side for the recent WICB President’s Cup, Tamar Lambert has been named in a 24-man squad to begin preparation for next year’s regional four-day tournament.
Lambert, who has led Jamaica in recent years in the absence of West Indies captain Chris Gayle, was named along with several discarded Test players including Daren Powell, Xavier Marshall and Carlton Baugh.
The 28-year old batsman was announced in an 18-man training squad for the President’s Cup last month but failed to make the final cut for the tournament won by Trinidad & Tobago.
At the time, chairman of selectors Nehemiah Perry said Lambert’s lack of fitness was to blame for his exclusion.
The leading batsman in this year’s four-day competition with 759 runs, Lambert was inspirational in leading Jamaica to their second straight first class title this year.
Selectors have named several young players in the training squad, with West Indies Under-19 batsman Horace Miller, Melbourne’s John-Ross Campbell, Westmoreland wicketkeeper Maverick Perry and St Ann pace bowler Ricardo Dacres included.
The 19-year-old Campbell, who has scored heavily in the domestic tournament, is one of two new faces in the trial squad with 23-year-old Manchester batsman Zeniffe Fowler also pencilled in.
Both batsmen were impressive in last month’s President’s Cup one-day trials.
