Naresh Persaud, 38, called ‘Nihal’ or ‘Nari’ was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was reportedly shot by the 76-year-old farmer and former school teacher, who is the holder of a licensed firearm.
A post-mortem examination performed on Persaud’s remains revealed that he died of “multiple pellet wounds to the right, middle and lower quadrants of the abdomen with multiple perforations of the gut and perforation to the right iliac artery,” according to pathologist, Dr Vivikanand Brijmohan. Police are to submit a report on the incident to the Director of Public Prosecutions today and will await advice on how to proceed with charges.
Reports are that the farmer was awakened by noise coming from his chicken pens and on checking saw a man lurking around the area. “It is reported that he [the farmer] discharged a round from his shotgun,” police said.
The farmer discovered Nihal, who is believed to be mentally challenged, lying on the ground when he checked the area.
Stabroek News learnt from a police source that the farmer contacted police who took the injured man to the hospital.
