A 19-year-old vendor was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail for possession of obscene tapes when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Richard Singh of 130 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara is accused of having obscene tapes in his possession for trade at Grove on November 19.
According to Singh’s attorney, Paul Fung-A-Fat, his client was at Grove when he was given the tapes to sell. Singh, he said, made the mistake of trying to sell the tapes to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud’s nephew at a bar in the area. The Crime Chief was also in that bar, Fung-A-Fat said, and then he requested reasonable bail.
Fung-A-Fat told the court that his client would usually get DVDs from some men and sell them and would receive a commission on his sales. The attorney contended that if anyone should be charged it should be the person burning the DVDs. Singh is to return to the Providence Magistrate’s Court on January 5.
