Stabroek News understands that the two wanted men were placed on an identification parade but the police were forced to release them after they were not identified.
A senior police officer yesterday confirmed the release but could not say when this occurred. He said too that the men were released on substantial bail.
Troy Ellis, 33, of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/ Highway surrendered in the company of his lawyer last Thursday while Shawn Benn, 42, of Princes Street turned up at the Brickdam Police Station the following day also accompanied by a lawyer.
The duo are among eight persons police are seeking for questioning into the November 4 attacks including murder, robbery and setting fire to two public buildings.
The others wanted are Charles Clarke called ‘Pumpkin’ or ‘Perkin; Colin Jones called `Bunny’; Kurt Thierens called ‘Glasses;’ and arson accused Keith Ferrier called `General’. Jones and Thierens had previously escaped from the Providence Police Station lock-ups shortly after they were held for questioning into the Ministry of Health Fire earlier this year.
Clarke’s relatives have since said that he could not have committed the crimes he is being implicated in since he has been in French Guiana since May while the whereabouts of the others are unknown.
There are reports that Jones and Thierens were hiding out in Suriname.
