Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, will soon benefit from road upgrades, Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali told the residents on Monday.
He was informing them of the new development plan which will focus on the enhancement of community roads and residents’ living conditions, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Monday’s meeting was a follow-up to address various issues that residents had raised in relation to road upgrades during the handing over of titles in the housing scheme on September 27 last.
The minister told residents that roads 4, 5, and 6 of the Dazzell Housing Scheme have been placed on the agenda for improved infrastructure and contracts have been advertised for the commencement of the projects.
Meanwhile, works for the upgrade of roads 7 and 8 have been sent to the Caribbean Development Bank for approval.
“We are going to work aggressively to ensure that roads 7 and 8 are completed,” he said, according to GINA.
In 2006 several projects were undertaken in the scheme, including the installation of water mains up to the 16th Street of the 23 streets at a cost of $20M, as well as the completion of the main access road in the scheme up to 19th Street at an approximate cost of $50M.
And this year, 1.2 km of roads along with four culverts and 1 km of distribution mains were constructed at a cost of $41M to benefit about 500 people.
Ali said he is hoping that the ministry can garner some more resources to conduct enhancement of the main roads before yearend.
“These interventions are part of government’s holistic plans to improve access and conditions. We are going to continue to focus on developing this scheme,” he said.
Ali noted that water supply is an issue that the ministry will address aggressively and soon a technical study will be conducted on the network distribution system in the community in order to correct the shortcomings, GINA reported.
He also urged the residents to monitor the projects when they commence to ensure that good quality work is delivered to them.
