We the members of the Linden Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Development would like to express our concern over the non-arrival of the entity that is expected to replace the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) which ends on December 31.
It is our opinion that LEAP has put the necessary systems in place for a smooth handover to the new entity which was due to be in place since June 2009. However, to date there is no indication if or when the new entity will start work, despite having written letters requesting such information.
There will be much confusion and distress for our members and other businesses in the community if the new entity does not come into operation shortly – eg, what will be the fate of tenants in the Region 10 Business Centre after December 31?
It is highly unlikely that LEAP will depart and leave the building unattended. It is more likely that tenants will be denied entry to the building and will therefore not be in a position to earn their livelihood thereafter.
While it might appear that the remaining six weeks (including the Xmas season) is enough for a simple handover to take place, it should be noted that this is not a simple process, since LEAP has been in existence for several years, completed many projects, and has a number of ongoing projects such as The Business Incubator and LEAF. Accounting and documentation need to be considered, and the verification of assets to be handed over would also need to be considered.
These activities will certainly require more than a few days.
We are therefore appealing to the officials concerned to resolve this matter urgently.
Yours faithfully,
