This year’s Guyana Open golf tournament is being sponsored by Banks DIH Limited and will be known as the 2009 Power Stout Open Golf Tournament.
So said Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters yesterday.
According to Peters, the company has decided that it will sponsor the tournament set for this Saturday and Sunday at the Lusignan Golf Club, East Coast Demerara and an announcement to this effect will take place tomorrow at the Banks DIH Conference Room at Thirst Park starting at 14:00 hours (2:00 p.m.).
According to Banks DIH Marketing Executive Carlton Joao, Power Stout is one of the company’s newest lines of products.
Joao described the beverage as an energy-boosting beverage which is ideal for the competing golfers who will be battling during two days of competition over 36 holes.
According to Joao there will be special activities over the two days for spectators but emphasized that dull details will be available at the Launch.
Competing golfers from Canada, Europe, Suriname, United States of America and hosts Guyana are likely to surpass the previous record of entries to the tournament. Last year’s tournament attracted 72 players.
Jerome Khan, Captain of Lusignan Golf Club, disclosed that several of the players are already in the country and a large contingent from neighbouring Suriname will arrive later this week.
Khan said that the course is in excellent shape, adding that players can expect an entertaining two days of golf.
The defending men’s champion Imran Khan and female reigning champion Christine Sukhram will be lined up to defend their titles.
A strong team that will include Chairman Clifford Reis, Gavin Todd, Mark Lashley and Albert Semple will also represent Banks DIH.
Banks DIH has been a major sponsor of the Guyana Open over the years and last year’s tournament was staged under the Smirnoff Vodka brand.
