Mohan Noharie, of Lot 51 ‘CC’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was told by Magistrate Priya Beharry that he was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of unlawful wounding with intent to commit murder. Noharie stood in the dock of the courtroom wearing a distressed expression as the charge was read to him. He was remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on November 18, at their Eccles home, Mohan unlawfully and maliciously wounded his wife, Chitra, with intent to murder her.
The matter was later transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court for December 16. The prosecution stated that on the day in question, Mohan’s birthday, the couple had a misunderstanding that resulted in Chitra moving out of their matrimonial home to stay with her daughter several streets away.
He said that Mohan became even more angry and had gone to confront Chitra about her moving out but ended up into another argument, which resulted in him using a cutlass to deal her several chops about her body. Mohan then fled the area.
The matter was reported and Mohan was found hiding in a weed-infested trench several streets away from the scene. He was arrested and charged.
The prosecution then objected to Mohan’s bail application when he suggested it, noting that Chitra is currently hospitalised as a result of the incident.
Reports are that Chitra was at a daughter’s home in Eccles, when her husband jumped the gate and gained entry to the house through a sliding door. Chitra had related to this newspaper that Mohan first entered their son’s room and assaulted him and had later turned on her.
Chitra is now a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery on her hands. According to reports one of Chitra’s limbs was left hanging after the attack ended.
