Fire fighters yesterday battled a fire at the Mandela Avenue dumpsite, which broke out two days ago even as a heavy cloud of smoke shrouded the area choking residents.
East La Penitence, Princes Street and Ruimveldt were enveloped in a misty blackish cloud and one resident raised the concern of traffic accidents. He said he was a cyclist and the heavy smoke reduced visibility to nearly nil.
Meanwhile, the rain that fell on Friday night before did not do much to douse the flames. In certain parts of the dumpsite flames were still visible.
One fire officer said that they were at the site all day yesterday battling the fire.
He was unable to say when the flames would be fully ousted but said that his men were doing their best.
