The Hand-In-Hand limited-overs second-division competition culminated on Friday evening under lights with Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) making light work of Lusignan Sports Club (LSC) by 87 runs at the Lusignan Community Centre.
DCC player and West Indies under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith scored a sparkling 94 as DCC, batting first, reached 304-8 from their allotted 50 overs. His knock came to life with seven boundaries and two sixes. LSC in response could only manage 218 in 40.5 overs with Chaitram Gangadin, who had earlier taken two wickets for 51 runs from his 10 overs, making 53; his knock had three boundaries and a six.
Devon Gonsalves and Lawrence Farnum conspired even further to put LSC out of the championship with knocks of 75 not out (4×4, 2×6) and 61 (6×4, 2×6) respectively. LSC fell short despite a sixth wicket partnership of 88 between Azim Haniff (50) and Brian Sattaur (40) but in the end it came down to Totaram Bishun who broke the partnership before he went on to grab 5-25 from 9.5 overs.
DCC took home $60,000 and the ECD team pocketed $40,000 from the $1.3 million sponsorship. Griffith received a trophy after he was named the man of the match.
Guyana Cricket Board first round three-day competition
New Line Cavaliers (NLC) recorded a memorable win against DCC on the last day despite many feeling that Christopher Barnwell’s conduct was unsportsmanlike. NLC, resuming from last Sunday needing 60 runs to complete their victory on 167-2 from 34 overs, reached 229-3 in 44.5 overs.
Gajanand Singh, who was unbeaten on 61 after day two, was left not out on 97 (10×4, 2×6) from 125 balls. Many felt that Barnwell willfully relieved a bowler, citing a shoulder injury after the bowler was hit for a six and a boundary to take Singh to 97 and NLC, needing nine runs to win.
Barnwell’s first delivery was ruled a dead ball after it went extremely wide, the second went for four byes and the third delivery went for four wides (five runs) down the leg side in the 45th over. Earlier NLC lost Captain Andre Percival, who added 12 to his overnight score, for 32; Omesh Dhanram was the most successful bowler with 2-48 from 10 overs.
