I have read with great interest and apprehension the call by the GPSU for tax reforms and increased salaries for public servants. I have been greatly disappointed by this union for failing to negotiate in good faith increases in travelling allowances for public servants over the past decade.
The last such minimal increase was in 1994 when gasoline was $194.00 per gallon. In 2009 gasolene is $800 per gallon, but travelling allowances have remained static. Public servants have to subsidise their already meagre salaries to maintain their vehicles which are being used to perform their official duties.
Both the government and the GPSU should set aside petty differences and demonstrate their care and concern for the welfare of citizens.
Yours faithfully,
