(BVI Daily News) – A man who fathered a child with a minor and pleaded not guilty to the offence of having sex with a girl under the age of 16 will stand trial today in the High Court.
The prosecution is alleging that between April and June 2008 a Guyanese man had sex with the minor at his home in Bell Vue. The Virtual Complainant (VC) was 15 years old at the time, while the accused was 30.
Court records reveal that the defendant gave the VC his telephone number and the two corresponded via text messaging. Some time during the dates mentioned above, the accused invited the VC to his home where he proceeded to kiss, fondle and then have sex with her. Afterwards, he gave her something to wipe herself off and advised her to drink a glass of water when she returned home.
The deed came to light in November 2008 when the VC was taken to the hospital to be examined for an infection and it was revealed she was eight months pregnant.
The following month the VC gave birth and a DNA test identified the defendant as the father. Stephen Daniels will be defending the accused.
Meanwhile, a couple facing charges of rape and perverting the case of justice will reappear in court on December 7. A witness was not able to return to testify because her passport had expired. This was revealed in the High Court yesterday morning as the trial was expected to commence.
The couple, Nevis nationals who have living in the BVI for a number of years, made headlines when the male was accused of raping the teenage daughter of his girlfriend some time in 2007. He was arrested for the offence, but the girlfriend subsequently took the child to the United States.
After intense investigation, both the mother and daughter were found and on May 14, 2008. The woman was escorted back to the territory by US Marshals to face perverting the course of action and interfering with a prosecution’s witness.
