– Triple header on tonight
It was the same script but a different cast when Ravens and Eagles met in the 3rd Division knockout tournament as the Dyna’s Embroidery-sponsored team soared to a 65-37 win. Also on the same card, Pepsi Sonics were able to hold off a battling Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 64-45 as the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) 3rd Division and Open knockout competition continued.
After watching their 1st Division side crush Eagles, the junior Dyna’s Ravens replicated the performance when the two sides met.
From jump-ball, the Eagles never seemed into the game as the Ravens who obviously had more flap in their wings played the game at a high pace, much to the discomfort of their opponents.
The first quarter ended 18-7 in favour of Ravens. Eagles only managed to score five points in the second as Ravens doubled theirs to lead 26-12 at half time.
It was all about the Ravens and looking on, their players were enjoying the game so much that it became like a joke since they missed some easy baskets. Tyrone Hamid also missed some simple dunks as he tried to entertain the crowd.
The only player who seemed in full no-nonsense mode was centre Keno George. The slimily built player made life a living hell for the diminutive Eagles players with his block shots and had the play of the game when he pulled the ball out of the air at the defensive end and ran the court, received a pass on the move and rocked the rim with a hard two-handed dunk.
George had a game high 16 points while Antwain Benjamin chipped in with eight for the Ravens. Tiago Thom top scored for the Eagles with nine points while Nazil Mohamed, Bernard John and Claude Wiggins all scored four points.
Meanwhile, in the opening game of the night’s triple header, the Pepsi Sonics blasted their way past GDF who came out guns blazing in the first half of the game.
The army men who turned up at the venue mere seconds before jump-ball, played a high paced game and had the Sonics who led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, on their heels.
The soldiers seemed to have reloaded their guns at the end of the first quarter, coming out in the second -licking shots from all corners of the court, but throughout the Sonics were never looking worried.
At halftime, the scoreboard read, 27-23 in favour of the Guyana Defence Force.
In the penultimate period, it was all about the Sonics, who limited the soldiers to just ten points in the quarter, ending leading 37-40 and then they went into overdrive but by this time, the GDF had run cold.
Darrion Lewis netted a game high 21 points with admirable support coming from Courtney Hinds (17) and Keith Tute (8). Oral Younge shot 16 points for GDF and Royston James 11.
The tournament will continue tonight with a triple header with game one being a Third Division clash between Bounty Colts and Beepats Scorpions from 18:00 hours.
Pepsi Sonics and Maccabees will square off in the first of two Open fixtures with the second being Bounty Colts against Beepats Scorpions.
