A 20-year-old excavator operator, attached to Correia and Correia Limited (CCL), was crushed to death yesterday morning while on duty.
Shem Mercurius, of Vauxhall, Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, was pronounced dead on arrival at a private city hospital some time yesterday morning. Circumstances surrounding the young man’s death are not clear but relatives reported last evening that CCL said Mercurious died while on duty.
Stabroek News was unable to contact officials at CCL for a comment on the matter.
Ehdol Delph said that her great nephew reported for work at the Eccles firm and a few hours later she was told by another relative about the incident.
“We still don’t know exactly what happened but they said that he died while on the job… that it was an industrial accident,” Delph said.
Meanwhile, when Stabroek News visited the young man’s Canal home his relatives were still in shock. Pat Mercurius, 71, said her grandson had grown up with her. The woman returned here, from England, last Thursday to spend the holiday with him and other relatives.
“Ow, ow Shem was all meh had,” the distressed woman cried repeatedly, “…is only this morning me see he and now he gone… he never coming back.”
