Four persons travelling in a minibus yesterday sustained injuries after the bus collided with a RAV 4 jeep on Lamaha Street.
The injured persons are the minibus driver Thomas Stewart, conductor Khamraj Shivcharran and passengers Felicia Glasglow of Melanie, and Shezema Bassaliut of Lusignan. Seven persons were reportedly in the Route 44 minibus BGG 3417 at the time of the accident.
Stewart, who is said to be in his early 60s, suffered injuries to his head and feet and is said to be the most serious of the patients. The other persons sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred some time after midday towards the eastern end of Lamaha Street, in the vicinity of the intersection with Peter Rose Street. The RAV 4 bore licence plate number PKK 6383.
Shivcharran, of Enmore, recounted that the bus was heading to Melanie at the time of the accident. According to him, they were travelling east along Lamaha Street and had just overtaken two vehicles when they encountered a RAV 4 that attempted a sudden turn south on Lamaha Street. He said the bus ran into the side of the vehicle, which he insisted appeared out of nowhere. After colliding with the RAV 4, the vehicle then careened off the road and collided with the side of a trench before ending up on its side by the trench.
A resident in the area said she was inside when she heard the sound of a solid impact.
She said she rushed out the house and saw the bus on its side by the drain outside her home. She said persons assisted with turning the vehicle and removing its passengers.
The injured were then transported to the nearby Georgetown Public Hospital.
Driver of the RAV 4, Widette Oudkerk, declined to comment when approached by this newspaper.
