A 16-year-old boy was granted bail in the sum of $100,000, while a man was remanded to prison when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with breaking and entering another man’s home and stealing a digital camera and a portable DVD player.
The teen and Jermaine Marshall, who gave his address as Lamaha Springs, both pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny when Magistrate Priya Beharry read it to them.
They are expected to make another court appearance on December 2.
The duo denied that on November 20, they broke and entered the home of Lin Jay Harry and stole a portable DVD player and a digital camera, totalling $140,000 in value.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question Harry secured his home and left to go to work at 8.30 am.
He said that at about 8 pm, Harry received a call from a neighbour who informed him that the defendants had broken into his home.
He said that the neighbour heard a strange noise coming from Harry’s home and upon checking he saw the two accused breaking into the home.
He said the neighbour raised an alarm and they attempted to run away, but he and several other public-spirited citizens gave chase and apprehended them.
They were later handed over to the police.
The prosecutor said he had no objections to the teen’s bail application, but stated that Marshall had told the police that he lives at Lot 16 Hadfield Street, Lodge, and then he told the court that he lives in Lamaha Springs.
He said he was objecting to Marshall’s bail application on the grounds that it was clear he has no fixed place of abode and so it may be difficult to locate him if he were released.
