The Berbice zone of the 2009 Guyana Cricket Board sponsored First Division 3-day cricket competition continued last weekend with the start of one of the scheduled two Group A matches.
In the match at the Edinburgh ground, West Berbice has so far taken first innings points from Edinburgh. Edinburgh after losing the toss got off to a good start of 98 from their opening batsmen Raid Ally and Rudrunauth Seepersaud.
After Seepersaud fell to Keyron Fraser for 35, it was left to Ally to hold the innings together. He went on to make 70 in the process as Edinburgh reached 233 all out in their first innings. Bowling for West Berbice, leg-spinner Andrew Dennis took 5-65 in 15 overs and off-spinner Krishnadat Ramoo 3-57.
When West Berbice responded in their first innings, Raffel Estriado following his two half centuries against Blairmont Community Centre in the previous round, slammed his maiden century at any level. He scored 114 while 52 was put together by former Berbice Under-19 cricketer Colin Duke as West Berbice got to 261 all out and a lead of 28 runs.
Ally returned with the ball to grab seven wickets for 70 runs from 14.4 overs.
Edinburgh in their second innings managed to reach 167-6 by the end of the second day with a lead of 139 runs. Ally was still there on 43 not out, a key person to ensure that Edinburgh set West Berbice a challenging target on Saturday.
Ally now has a total of 322 runs from five innings, surpassing Rose Hall Community Centre (RHCC) batsman Vedesh Singh’s 303 from two matches. Also scoring was Chris Yadram with 41; Ramoo has taken 4-61 from 27 overs.
Meanwhile the other match scheduled between Young Warriors and Blairmont Community Centre at Cumberland was not played because Blairmont failed to show up. The Blairmont team was unable to raise the toll to cross the bridge and has therefore ruled themselves out of the tournament since they were not in default for the first time.
